Telescopic Boom Lift Buying Guide: Choosing the Right 18-26 m Machine

Telescopic (straight) boom lifts are the productivity machines of the access industry: the boom extends in a straight line, reaches full height quickly, and gives the best horizontal outreach per meter of working height. In the popular 18-26 m class, three decisions determine whether the machine fits your work.

1. Working height and outreach - read both numbers

Manufacturers quote maximum working height (platform floor plus about 2 m of operator reach), but the number that decides real jobs is horizontal outreach at height. A 26 m machine like our GT-J24Li keeps useful outreach across most of its envelope, while a smaller 18 m machine such as the GT-J16 is lighter, cheaper to transport and fits tighter sites. Map your ten most common jobs before choosing - most fleets overbuy height they use twice a year.

2. Electric or diesel

Lithium-electric booms have crossed the threshold where they match diesel duty cycles for most rental and contractor work: a full shift on a charge, fast charging at lunch, zero emissions and far lower noise - which unlocks indoor, night-time and city-center work. Diesel still makes sense where charging is impossible or the machine runs double shifts continuously. If your jobs mix both, electric with a realistic charging plan wins on total cost.

3. Platform capacity and envelope restrictions

Two-person-plus-tools work needs a 250-300 kg platform rating; check whether the full capacity is available at full outreach or only in a restricted envelope. Also compare stowed length and weight against your trailer - a machine that needs a special low-loader costs you money on every move.

Specs that matter more than brochure height

  • Gradeability (40%+ for real construction sites)
  • Slew: continuous 360-degree rotation saves repositioning
  • Platform size and entry type for daily usability
  • Battery chemistry and warranty on electric models
  • Parts support and manual language for your market

Frequently Asked Questions

What size telescopic boom lift do I need?

Add up your highest regular work point plus the horizontal distance to it, then check the machine's working envelope diagram - not just its maximum height. If 80% of your jobs sit below 20 m, an 18-20 m class machine is usually the better economic choice than a 26 m unit.

Are electric telescopic boom lifts powerful enough for construction sites?

Modern lithium-electric booms in the 18-26 m class deliver full-shift duty cycles, 4WD traction and gradeability above 40%, matching diesel performance for most applications while cutting fuel and maintenance cost.

What is the difference between telescopic and articulating boom lifts?

A telescopic boom extends in a straight line - faster, with more horizontal outreach. An articulating boom has a hinged section that reaches up and over obstacles. Choose telescopic for open construction sites, articulating for maintenance around obstructions.

How much platform capacity do I need?

Two operators with tools typically require 250-300 kg. Confirm that the rated capacity is available at the outreach you plan to use, because some machines restrict capacity in parts of the envelope.

Can a telescopic boom lift be used indoors?

Electric models with zero emissions and low noise are routinely used indoors in the 18-26 m class, for example in stadiums, airports and plant halls - provided floor load and access width allow the machine in.
